After a full year trip with 2 beagles our rig stank! I bought a little portable steam cleaner and set to work.

I like it because I came do the carpet, but also the fabric furniture, window trims, etc. We carry it fulltime.

So here is my tip – I tried all the fancy bottled concoctions that stated EXTRA STRENGTH, gets rid of pet odors, blah blah blah and you know what works best and is cheap and not so full of toxic chemicals?

Vinegar and Borax detergent mixed 50/50 with water.

Sure the rig did have a vinegar smell for a while but once it dissipated in a few days the beagle smell was way better, where as the commercial stuff didn’t even touch it, just made it a wet dog smell for awhile.

This last time I picked up some stuff called Allen’s double strength cleaning vinegar, it is double strength (not for eating)and worked even better. I got it a Home Hardware in Canada, probably find similar at Walmart in the US.

    :good:

Online you can get it here, but it seems to be a Canadian thing.  Maybe you can get rich exporting it to us!

So it’s 50/50 Borax to Vinegar, then how much of that to water?  Another 50/50?

I usually do about 1/3 borax to 2/3 vinegar then 50/50 with water. May want to try it on a small spot first, I’ve done it several times and no effect of the carpet, but you never know.

We have one of the little green cleaners – great rig.  Had not the thought of using it in the RV…thanks.

I use it on everything, carpets, furniture, truck interior and any fabric decor in the rig like the window valences. Fits nicely in our fifth wheels basement storage. I know it is working because the output reservoir water is black. Really gets the dust out. I have a set of knee pads to, makes the job easier on the knees.

It got clogged once with dog hair but was able to just flush it out with a garden hose.

This cleaning vinegar sure smells a lot less the the regular food grade white vinegar.
