Is it safe for Class A’s to travel this highway? And how long is it?

We spend last week in the Big Sur area. Although the road is long and windy, nearly 100 miles between Monterey and Cambira, there should be no problem for a Class A. We saw some very big Class A’s in the campgrounds, even some long 5th wheeels. There are plenty of places to pull over and let cars pass. We spent a night at San Simeon Creek state campground and two nights at Kirk Creek Campground. We would recommend both of these places.

Thanks for the reply- we are still home in Canada right now but had seen a nice bridge photo going over part of the ocean along that highway and some were saying it was a dangerous road…

Its safe enough if you take it slow, we have driven the road from Monterey to Cambria many times. You just have to take your time. There are so many turnouts to get out an take pictures of the rugged coast. Its a drive you really shouldn’t miss.

What were the camping rates like Dave and did you have to reserve much in advance?

    San Simeon Creek Campground:
    USE FEE: $ 25.00
    TRANSACTION FEE: $ 8.00
    SENIOR DISCOUNT: $ (2.00)
    TOTAL: $ 31.00

    Kirk Creek Campground:
    USE FEE: $ 50.00 (2 nights)
    TRANSACTION FEE: $ 9.00
    INTERAGENCY SENIOR PASS.: $ (25.00)
    TOTAL: $ 34.00

We booked online so it costs a bit more. I don’t think there is any trouble getting a space at San Simeon this time of year, its quite a large campground. Nice thing about it is you can walk under the highway to the beach for some awesome sunsets.
Kirk Creek maybe a little harder to schedule. We were pretty lucky to get a spot, probably due to cancellation. We registered Jan 20 for Fed 11 and 12. It was worth the effort. Spaces are on bluff overlooking the rocky shoreline. We say whales passing and there is a trail down to the rocky beach for some great photography opportunities with the surf crashing on the rocks.

Drove that from Sandiego as far as you can north. Beautiful.

Thanks, not too bad of rates at all considering the proximity to large populations.
