ParticipantSince most small MX crossings do not even have a person checking passports do down at the start of the season get a MX tourist visa and auto ins.. cheap.. then just before you head N in the spring drive across to MX with the RV, stop at a Cantina, and return to the USA.. they have no idea how long you have been in MX .

MemberI am kinda late to this discussion.
Have the changes affected anyone yet? IE have you spent more than 6 months over the period and been flagged or called out?
I’m wondering because we may be planning on RVing down to the US but also perhaps flying somewhere while we are there (IE Jamaica) for a month. So I assume our time while we are out of the US in the other country would be counted.
In other words, if we go down for 4 months, but spend a month somewhere else then we are only there for 3 months? What if we just crossed to the Baja – do they scan you out there? I wouldn’t think so, but I’ve never been down there so not sure.

From what I understand if you leave the US for less than 30 days and come back the clock on the original six-month visa keeps ticking. Many snowbirds go home for Christmas holidays and that time is still counted as being in the US.
We’ve gone to Los Algodones many times for dental and only the US customs coming back is scanning our passports, going in we just walk over with no one checking anything. It may be different if you venture further into Mexico as I understand there are checkpoints further inside the border.

MemberHmm ok thanks
That is kind of what I was thinking. We’d likely only be going down for 3-4 months on our first visit.
My concern is that I may still have to do work while we are there – it’s all online and all my clients are in Canada so I don’t want to take a double hit on taxes 🙂

Canada and the US have a tax treaty so you can’t be double taxed. – https://turbotax.intuit.ca/tax-resources/foreign-income/the-us-canada-tax-treaty.jsp

MemberO great thanks! We’ve been hearing that you could be if you worked down there. I was already trying to figure out ways to hide my self-employment 🙂
