Hey folks, as some of you know, I am brand spanking new to RV’ing.  I haven’t had much time to really dig into my RV that much, but this morning I decided to look at some things since the weather would be nice.  So I decided to trace my wires/pipes/hoses and what have you to get some ideas on how everything was route.  I can across this (see picture) I googled it and it appears that this is actually a 50AMP surge protector that is liked both to shore power and my 5500w Onan.

Could this be true!?!  Does this mean that I have a built in surge protector and do not have to purchase one!?!

I figured I’d better ask the veterans on this one.

Looks like it is a decent basic surge protector, its good it sense miswired power outlets, the only thing missing to it is the ability to shut down the power if the incoming voltage goes too high or low voltage. Some of the more advanced ones with do that.

I did some reading on this since I posted.  Apparently (insert Dr Evil Quote Marks in 3. . . 2. . .1. . . ) This unit will “shut down”  in the event of a power surge on shore power, wait 30 seconds, then automatically kick on the Onan as a backup.  Well, at least that’s what Surge Power claims this unit will do.  If it stops a surge from frying my insides, I’ll take it.
